Urban Birds Project
Helping the homeless with harmonicas
We are often inspired by the acts of people using our harmonicas. A
young Belgian gentleman recently contacted us to let us know what he was
doing with Bluesband harmonicas in Bogota, Colombia. He wrote:
“My name is Wouter Buyst. I am from Belgium but am currently living in Bogotá, Colombia. I've recently started a project here called 'Pajaritos Urbanos/ Urban Birds'. The project consists in that I hand out harmonicas to people begging on the street with the idea that it's better making a living while playing music than just begging. I work with donations. People donate 5 euro on the website of the project, and with the money I go buy Hohner Bluesband harmonicas in the local store, and then give them to a person begging, who seems sincere enough in his or her interest to learn to play the harmonica and thereby change his or her life a bit. Please be so kind to take a look at the project:

Thank you kindly for your attention and warm greetings.”
We went to Wouter’s website and were quite impressed with his follow through. He takes photos, and even videos, of the recipients on the streets, so that people who have donated can see who has ended up with a harmonica. Wouter offers to teach them a bit to get them started, follows up with them, and seems to have found a creative and caring way of doing something positive with our instruments. Hohner applauds the Urban Birds project, and is sending a donation of harmonicas to support his mission.
